Confessions of a Former Cruise Skeptic

I used to be one of those people. “Cruising’s not for me,” I’d say, while scrolling through pictures of resorts and road trips. “I’m not really a boat guy.” Spoiler: I had zero idea what I was missing.

Then my wife and my son’s in-laws finally talked me into trying it. And now? Let me just say — Cruising has become one of my favorite ways to vacation.

The ships? VERY big and so cool! Floating resorts with better food, better views, and amazing bartenders. It’s  never felt crowded, and there’s something for everyone. The best part? I’m not constantly thinking about how much everything costs. It’s all pre-paid, all-inclusive, and that drink package? Just get it. Trust me.

Excursions? Always a blast. (Well, except that one soggy afternoon in Cozumel when it rained all day — but even then, we were with friends, so we still had a good day!)

What surprised me the most? How easy it is to unplug. I’m not glued to my phone. No work emails. No calls. Just ocean air, new friends everywhere you turn, and the people I care about having the time of their lives. It’s the most relaxed I’ve ever felt on vacation. Honestly.

My wife and son do get a little seasick, but ever since she discovered those behind-the-ear patches, they’re good to go. I’ve now cruised with three different cruise lines — and I’m trying a fourth this December. Every single one has been great in its own way.

One of our favorite traditions? Taking the corny couples cruise photos. You know the ones — matching outfits, sunset backdrops, awkward prom poses. We love them. They're goofy, nostalgic, and they always make us laugh later.

If you’re like I was — on the fence, overthinking it — here’s my advice: don’t wait. Book the cruise, start with a short one if you’re not sure. Go see the ocean. I’m only mad I didn’t do it sooner.
